The Coconut Problem (weekly problem)
The Coconut Problem
There were three sailors, Daniela, Melina, and Alex. They were stuck on a deserted island that was also inhabited by a band of monkeys. They worked all day to collect coconuts but were too tired that night to count them so they agreed to divide them equally the next morning.
During the night, Daniela work up and decided to take her share. She found that she could make three equal piles, with one coconut left over, which she threw to the monkeys. She put her own share in a pile down the beach, and left the remainder in a single pile near where they all slept.
Later that night, Melina awoke and, likewise, decided to take her share of coconuts. She also was able to make three equal piles, with one coconut left over, which she threw to the monkeys.
Somewhat later, Alex awoke and did exactly the same thing with the remaining coconuts.
In the morning, all three sailors noticed that the pile was considerably smaller, but each thought that she knew why and said nothing. When they divided what was left of the original pile of coconuts equally, each sailor received seven and one was left over, which they threw to the monkeys.
How many coconuts were in the original pile?

The Plum Problem
We will be working through the Plums Problem in class in order to practice the REVISED problem solving strategy. The major difference is that there are specific requirements to complete at each stage of the problem solving process.
The Plums Problem
One night at sixth grade camp, Mark couldn’t sleep, so he went down into the kitchen, where he found a bowl of plums. Being hungry, he took 1/6 of the plums.
Later that same night, Josh was hungry and couldn’t sleep. He too, found the plums and took 1/5 of what Mark had left.
Still later, Britton awoke, went to the kitchen, and ate ¼ of the remaining plums.
Even later, Kara ate 1/3 of what was then left.
Finally, Sierra ate ½ of what was left, leaving only three plums for the camp counselors.
How many plums were originally in the bowl?
We worked in class to complete parts 1, 2 and 3 (if you do not finish these sections then take home to finish *due Tuesday).
